Sussex County Vol. Firefighters and D.S.F.S. Host Legislators Day
In an effort to encourage understanding and communication with our government officials the Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters Association hosted a Tour event at the Delaware State Fire School Sussex Division on October 28th.
A committee was in place, Terry Jester, Bill Tobin and Patrick Miller to plan the event. Working with Mike Lowe, Senior Instructor of the Fire School and Sussex Division Coordinator, the event was deemed very successful by S.C.V.F.A. President Jester. Six State Legislators attended along with Sussex County Council President Michael Vincent.
The guest participated in the firefighting evolutions along with demonstrations of E.M.S. and Technical Rescue. The purpose was to give the elected officials a better understanding of what Emergency Services do for training and why it is necessary.
The Georgetown Fire Company provided a firefighting crew to act as students for the demonstrations. Each station had an Instructor to explain the details. Fire School Field Instructors Gordon Davis and Ralph Karl explained fire attack and the use of the Structural Firefighting Building. Instructor Rodney Marvel conducted a demo of the new Vehicle Firefighting Prop. Russell Amidon handled Flammable Gas training allowing the guest to act as backup on the advancing hose lines.
The Sussex County Technical Rescue Team was present to display and demo equipment purchased through the County and Georgetown E.M.S. participated with EMT’s Lisa Fensick and Deanna Brown displaying the ambulance and showing the use of various equipment.
County Firefighters Association Officials, Terry Jester, Charlie Arnold, Hunter Holland and Ron O’Neal assisted as tour guides, students and hosts for the event.
Special thanks to Regina Headley Marvel and her volunteers for organizing refreshments.
