Sussex County Heroic Firefighter of the Year 2021
Medal of Bravery
Fire Chief George " Buddy" Willey III
On Thursday, September 10, 2020, at the intersection of Apple Tree and Sunnyside Road in the Bridgeville Fire District. Sussex EOC dispatched Station 72, Rescue 78, Medic 107, and 200 for a motor vehicle crash with possible entrapment and submerged underwater. Upon the arrival of the Deputy Chief Willey who responded directly to the incident found several bystanders and a blue car completely submerged. Bystanders were attempting to remove the vehicle with tow rope without success. Deputy Chief Willey entered the water without protective gear and a hammer to access the vehicle to rescue (1) the driver trapped underwater. Deputy Chief Willey was able to free the victim and with help of the bystander removed to safe dry ground. Deputy Chief Willey continued to check for other occupants while EMS crews assessed the victim who was in cardiac arrest. This act was done without the arrival of specialized apparatus and no protective equipment. Due to the quick, unselfish, and committed way to put others before himself the patient made a full recovery and had a heartful reunion with Chief Willey and others that were involved.
