Monday, November 14, 2011
Thanksgiving Safety The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially at Thanksgiving, however, we cannot forget it is also the most dangerous room in the home. Children love to play near the kitchen and be a part of all the activities. Please keep in mind some Safety tips for the Holiday that may prevent a tragedy. Holiday Home Fire Safety - Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop so you can observe it. - Stay at home while your turkey is cooking and make sure you check it often - Keep a children free zone of four feet around the stove to avoid contact with spills or hot liquids. - Make sure cords are not dangling where they could pull the object off the counter. - Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children. - Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Turkey Fryer Safety - Always use turkey fryers outdoors - Never use on wooden decks or in garages - Always use on a level surface. - Never leave unattended. Most fryers do not have thermostat controls. The oil could heat until the unit catches on fire. - Make sure the turkey is completely thawed. Oil and water never mix. - The National Turkey Foundation states a turkey should thaw 24 hours for every five pounds of it’s weight.
