At the National Fire Protection Association's Annual Conference the Public Education Section announced the theme for Fire Prevention Week 2010. Beep, Beep, Smoke Alarms, A Sound you can Live With is this Year's theme.
The NFPA stated:
- Almost 3,000 people die each year in home fires. - Smoke Alarms reduce your chances of dying in a fire by over half.
- No smoke alarms were present in over 40% or the incidents of fatal fires.
- An additional 23% had smoke alarms that did not operate.
- In 2008 U.S. Fire Departments responded to 386,500 home fires.
- A Fire Department averages responding to a home fire every 82 seconds.
- Roughly eight people die each day in a home fire
- U.S. Consumer Reports stated that interconnected Smoke Alarms were more likely to alert residents than battery smoke alarms alone.
